How Talk DAT! compares with other dictation apps

Talk DAT! (often written TalkDAT) is AI dictation for Windows and Mac by Knight AI+AV. Both desktop versions are in public beta. Install Windows from the Microsoft Store, or download the notarized Mac beta for Apple silicon.

Talk DAT! is available for Windows and Mac in public beta, local-first by design, and free. On the Local route, speech recognition runs on your own machine, and it turns rough speech into clean, ready-to-send text. Here is how it compares with Wispr Flow, Dragon, and the voice typing built into Windows.

Side by side.

Every Talk DAT! entry below is checked against what the shipping build actually does. Competitor entries state only well-known public facts, conservatively, as of August 2026. Where we are not certain, the cell says “Not confirmed” instead of making a guess. Prices and features change, so confirm on each vendor's site before you decide.

Which one is right for you?

No tool is best at everything. Here is when each one makes sense, including when we would point you somewhere else.

Pick Talk DAT! if...

privacy, a free app, and clean writing matter. Your dictation can run entirely on your own machine, the app is free, and you get clean text instead of a raw transcript.

Pick Dragon if...

you need legacy enterprise workflows. Dragon has decades of history in law offices and clinics, deep command-and-control conventions, and specialized editions that whole teams have built procedures around. It is a paid product, and if your organization already runs on Dragon, switching has a real cost.

Pick built-in Voice Typing if...

you only dictate now and then. Win+H is free, already installed, and fine for an occasional sentence. If you dictate every day, or want offline use, custom words, or proper formatting, you will want more.

Pick Spokenly if...

a plain transcript is all you want. Spokenly runs Whisper and Parakeet on your machine at no cost, with no account, and charges nothing to use your own API keys. If you want a plain offline transcript and nothing else, it does that well. Talk DAT! is free too, and adds what happens after the transcript: writing styles, recording recovery, per-app settings, and hardware triggers.

Pick Superwhisper if...

you want a mature cross-platform tool with its deepest local-model experience on Apple silicon. Its public pages say smaller on-device voice models can run on Windows and Intel Macs, while its Windows documentation says local language-model post-processing is not yet supported there. Talk DAT! is the better fit when you want an on-screen bar that shows what it is doing, recording recovery, per-app settings, and local speech built for Windows as well as Apple silicon Macs.

Pick Willow if...

you need SOC 2 Type II or HIPAA enforcement today. Willow offers those on its paid business plans; check their site for current pricing. Talk DAT! has not completed SOC 2 and does not offer a BAA, so if your work is regulated, choose a tool that already has those certifications. Willow is cloud-only, so it does not fit if you need processing that stays on your machine.

Questions people ask before switching.

Straight answers, matching what the product actually does today.

Does Talk DAT! work offline?

Yes. On the Local route, speech recognition runs on your own PC after a one-time model download, with no usage charges from us. Offline dictation begins after that first download, not straight out of the installer, and a cloud route remains optional: a supported provider with your own API key.

What does Talk DAT! cost?

Nothing. Talk DAT! is free to download and use, and no account is needed to dictate. If you add your own key for a supported provider, that provider bills you at its rates; Knight adds nothing.

Is there a Mac version of Talk DAT!?

Talk DAT! has public betas for Windows 10 and 11 and for Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. The Mac disk image is notarized by Apple. Intel Macs are not supported.

How does Talk DAT! handle privacy?

Talk DAT! is local-first. On the Local route, your speech is recognized on your own machine. A limited recovery buffer of your latest sessions is kept on your PC, for you, so a crash does not silently lose a long dictation. Nothing you dictate is sent to Knight. The local formatting log is opt-in, off by default, and never leaves your PC on its own.

Do I need an account to use Talk DAT!?

No. No account is needed to dictate. Signing in with an emailed six-digit code or Sign in with Apple is optional.
