Everything Talk DAT! does
49 features

Talk DAT! (often written TalkDAT) is AI dictation for Windows and macOS by Knight AI+AV. Install the Windows build from the Microsoft Store, or use the current notarized Mac beta.

This page covers current desktop capabilities across capture, on-device speech, your own provider keys, writing, recovery, and the app's design. Talk DAT! is free. Feature availability depends on platform, selected provider, downloaded models, and hardware.

01

Capture

8 features
  1. Hold to talk
Press your trigger, speak, and release. Talk DAT! then inserts, types, or copies the result through the selected delivery route.
  2. Hands-free sessions
Toggle it on, speak without holding the trigger, then finish from the Talk DAT! bar. The configured session limit still applies.
  3. Instant paste, then polish
A speculative result can land first and a cleaner pass can replace it moments later. Avoid typing in that app until the Talk DAT! bar shows it is done.
  4. Automatic gain for quiet speech
Quiet speech is boosted automatically, so a whisper is heard like normal talking.
  5. Live voice wave
The Talk DAT! bar shows a wave that moves with your voice.
  6. Protected recordings
A bounded set of recent accepted voice sessions stays on your PC for replay, copying, and recovery.
  7. Dead-mic detection
It tells you after two silent seconds, before you dictate a whole paragraph into a dead microphone.
  8. Click-to-capture hotkeys
Press the keys you want, then let go to save the shortcut.

Your own provider

6 features
  1. Visible route, visible fallback
Your chosen route handles live speech: a local model, or a provider you connect with your own key. If a configured fallback route takes over, the Talk DAT! bar shows which route is in use.
  2. Streaming while you speak
On a provider route that streams, long dictations come back while you speak, and it waits for your last word before finishing.
  3. Your provider tries twice
If a live session on your own provider is interrupted, the captured audio retries there before your PC steps in.
  4. Clear fallback
When a dictation falls back to your PC, the Talk DAT! bar says so. The route does not change silently.
  5. Auto-return
When your connection comes back, Talk DAT! switches back to your provider.
  6. Smart writing pass
Optional AI cleanup through your own provider key.

Local speech

5 features
  1. Curated models, on your machine
Supported open speech models can be downloaded and run entirely on-device.
  2. Pick, download, switch
A catalog you choose from inside the app, with instant switching.
  3. Hardware check
Setup checks your hardware and recommends the model that runs best on it.
  4. Long recordings, live progress
Long recordings transcribe while you are still speaking.
  5. Offline after setup
After a one-time model download, dictation can work without a network. There is nothing to pay us for it.
04

Writing

8 features
  1. Smart punctuation
Spoken commands honored; question marks only where a question was asked.
  2. Lists from speech
Spoken enumerations become real numbered lists.
  3. Numbers, times and dates
Times, records, fractions and figures come out the way you'd type them: 3 p.m., 12–4, 1/5.
  4. Self-corrections
Say "Tuesday, no wait, Thursday" and only Thursday is typed.
  5. Cleanup levels
From verbatim to polished, you choose how much smoothing your words get.
  6. Fix That
Tell Talk DAT! how to change the last paste. Availability depends on the packaged build and configured shortcut.
  7. Command Mode
    Speak instructions instead of content.
  8. Built-in formatting fallback
If AI formatting is not available, the built-in formatter still cleans up your text.
05

Vocabulary

5 features
  1. Add words & phrases
Teach it names, brands, and preferred spellings from Settings > Tools.
  2. Learns from your fixes
Fixed a name by hand? Copy the corrected word and Talk DAT! learns it for next time. It stays on your computer, and one switch in Words & Phrases turns it off.
  3. Sound-alike repair
Phonetic matching can turn "shiv on" into Siobhan, with context guards designed to reduce unwanted replacements.
  4. Curated terminology
Optional packs can supply selected product, professional, and trademark spellings before you add your own.
  5. Your words help recognition
On engines that support it, your custom words help the speech recognizer itself.
06

Tools

8 features
  1. Translation
One switch for auto-translated dictation; one button to tap, talk, and read it translated. Local engines, or your own provider key.

Privacy

3 features
  1. The account holds sign-in details, not dictation
If you sign in, your account keeps your email address, how you signed in, the computers you signed in on, and your theme, never transcripts, history or your local dictionary. BYOK requests go from your machine straight to the provider you choose.
  2. Speech stays on your computer
When you use a local model, your speech is never sent anywhere.
  3. Your recordings
Recovery recordings stay on your PC, and you can delete them any time.
