Talk DAT!
Talk DAT! for Windows

Talk DAT!: speech to text built for Windows.

Talk DAT! (often written TalkDAT) is available in public beta for Windows and Mac. Install Windows from the Microsoft Store; the separate Mac beta supports Apple silicon on macOS 14 or later.

Hold Ctrl+Win, say what you mean, release. Talk DAT! transcribes your words, cleans them up, and delivers finished text at your cursor in the app you were just typing in. One click installs it from the Microsoft Store, global hotkeys work system-wide, and downloaded local models run speech recognition offline, on your own PC.

Hold a key and talk.

Talk DAT! shows a small bar that stays on top of your other windows, with the microphone off until you press the key. Hold Ctrl+Win to record, release to finish. Tap Ctrl+Win+Space for hands-free dictation, and Ctrl+Win+Esc is the panic stop that ends everything at once. Supported actions can be rebound in Settings, conflicts are explained in plain language, and extra mouse buttons and Xbox controller buttons can start dictation too.

"hey can you resend the uh the march invoice, the first one had the wrong PO number on it, um also are we still good for thursday at two"

Talk DAT! delivered

Could you resend the March invoice? The first copy had the wrong PO number. Also, are we still confirmed for Thursday at 2:00?

Illustrative dictation. Executive gives you polished, formal text; Chill keeps your own phrasing. They are one click apart in the Talk DAT! menu.

Delivery · one flow

Talk to text where you already type.

There is no separate window to dictate into and copy out of. When you release the trigger, Talk DAT! delivers the finished text into the Windows app focused at that moment: the email draft, the chat box, the document, the form in your browser. Delivery uses a verified clipboard write followed by a paste, and the app records the method it attempted.

If a paste fails, you still have the text. Apps handle synthetic pastes differently, so Talk DAT! falls back to copying the text whenever a paste is not accepted, and your latest protected voice sessions stay on this PC, ready to replay, copy, or transcribe again from History.

Local models · offline

Offline speech to text, on your own machine.

Download an on-device speech model once and the Local route runs recognition entirely on your PC. The built-in model manager lets you compare, download, select, and delete models, downloads are verified and resumable, and power users can point Talk DAT! at a compatible Hugging Face repository. If Windows reports no network and a local model is ready, dictation routes local before capture even starts.

One catch. Offline dictation begins after that one-time model download, not straight out of the installer, and the Local route covers speech recognition, not every feature in the app. A cloud route stays optional: a supported provider with your own API key.

Install from the Microsoft Store.

The Microsoft Store is the recommended Windows route and handles updates automatically. Prefer a direct download? A Windows EXE and portable ZIP live in the download section of the homepage, but a direct installer can trigger SmartScreen while release reputation builds. Use only the official page and verify the published SHA-256 checksum and build receipt.

It is free. Talk DAT! costs nothing to download or use, and no account is needed to dictate. Sign-in, by emailed six-digit code or Sign in with Apple, is optional.

Beyond voice typing

What else it does.

On a local model, Live Captions can show your words in the Talk DAT! bar while you are still speaking, with nothing leaving the machine. Opt-in translation runs through a private local model and protects links, emails, and numbers through the round trip; the voice to text translation page covers it in depth. Teach Talk DAT! your names and jargon once with sounds-like aliases, or switch on one of four industry packs, nearly 1,400 curated terms, detailed on the dictation for work page.

Coming from something else? The Dragon alternative page walks through that switch, and the full comparison puts Talk DAT! next to Wispr Flow, Dragon, and the Win+H voice typing built into Windows.

Also on Mac.

A separate macOS 14+ public beta brings Talk DAT! to Apple silicon Macs; the dictation software for Mac page covers the requirements.

Questions

What Windows users ask first.

Straight answers, matching what the product actually does today.

How do I install speech to text on Windows?

Install Talk DAT! from the Microsoft Store, the recommended Windows route with automatic updates. A direct Windows EXE and a portable ZIP are also available, but a direct installer can trigger SmartScreen while release reputation builds. Use only the official download page and verify the published SHA-256 checksum and build receipt. Talk DAT! runs on Windows 10 and 11, is free, and needs no account to dictate.

Does Talk DAT! work offline on Windows?

Yes, on the Local route. Download an on-device speech model once and recognition runs on your own PC without sending your audio to a cloud provider. Offline dictation starts after that first model download, not straight out of the installer. A cloud route stays optional: a supported provider with your own API key.

What are the speech to text hotkeys?

The Windows defaults are hold Ctrl+Win to talk, Ctrl+Win+Space to toggle hands-free dictation, and Ctrl+Win+Esc as the panic stop. Supported actions can be rebound in Settings, and exact or nested hotkey conflicts are explained in plain language. You can also trigger dictation from extra mouse buttons or an Xbox controller.

Does it type into any Windows app?

Talk DAT! delivers finished text into the Windows app focused when delivery completes, using a verified clipboard write followed by a paste. Applications handle synthetic pastes differently, so rather than promising every app, Talk DAT! delivers by clipboard paste, Shift+Insert, or simulated typing, keeps the finished text on your clipboard, and every dictation stays in local History.

Is Talk DAT! available on Mac?

Yes. A separate macOS 14+ public beta is available for Apple silicon Macs. Talk DAT! runs on Windows and Mac only; there is no phone version.
